Christmas music can make room for singing, dancing and quiet moments. Choose songs that suit your group and the occasion: a school performance needs a different pace from a Christmas disco.
Save the Christmas playlist
Open the Children's Christmas Party and Dance Music playlist, save it to your library and test the sound before the party.
A 30-minute Christmas programme
- First 5 minutes: arrive gently and sing a familiar chorus together.
- Next 10 minutes: two or three dance songs. Children who want to can demonstrate a simple movement.
- Next 5 minutes: water and a short rest. Lower the music so everyone can talk.
- Final 10 minutes: Christmas freeze dance and a shared final song. Tell the children which song will be the last.
For Christmas freeze dance, pause the music and freeze as a Christmas tree, snowman or reindeer. Let a child suggest the next pose if they want to. Nobody needs to leave the game. See more dance games for children.
Songs for younger children and older pupils
For younger children, try a familiar song such as O Denneboom or Jingle Bells with one simple movement. Repetition helps; you do not need a new instruction every chorus. Older children can choose which of the dance tracks below they recognise.
A Christmas celebration can be quiet too. For a performance or shared singing, choose music that fits the school's plans and atmosphere. Listen to the words and the particular recording as well as its tempo.
Five Christmas dance favourites
- Snollebollekes: Beuk de ballen uit de boom. An energetic option to consider for older children.
- Blijwin®: Blijer dan Blij (met kerst). My own Christmas song for dancing together.
- Raak!: Kerstfeest van de eeuw. A cheerful choice for a dance round.
- Kinderen voor Kinderen: Niets is Cooler dan Kerstmis. Try it with children who recognise the chorus.
- Raak!: De Kerstbrigade. Another festive option to mix with familiar classics.
For an extra dance track, try Dancer het Disco Rendier. This is a selection of favourites, not a chart of new releases.
