What exactly is a swim disco?
A swim disco is a party that takes place in the pool, but with disco lights, upbeat music and often entertainment or a theme. The lights are dimmed, the music goes on and kids dance — and splash — at the same time. Ideal for children from group 4 up to first-year secondary school.
Why is a swim disco so popular?
- Experience + movement: kids are active, but it feels like one big party.
- Unique atmosphere: the lights, the water and the music create a magical experience.
- Safe and organised: working together with the pool staff keeps things clear and fun.
- Perfect for birthdays, schools or after-school care (BSO's): it’s just a bit different from a regular party.

Safety first: what should you watch out for?
A swim disco is all about fun, but safety is the foundation. That’s why I always collaborate with the pool staff and coordinate everything carefully.
🌫️ Fog machine? In moderation!
A little haze from a fog machine adds atmosphere, but too much smoke:
- obstructs the lifeguards' view
- makes it harder to keep track of kids in the water
- can feel unpleasant for children (and parents)
So: always discuss it in advance, and better too little than too much fog.
🛟 Don’t put too many items in the water
Inflatable animals and floating props are fun, but:
- they can disrupt the overview
- sometimes create tripping or entrapment hazards
- make it harder to reach a child in need quickly
I always advise: one or a few props is more than enough. Focus on lights, music and interaction rather than an overcrowded pool.
👀 Supervision and coordination
I handle the music and atmosphere, the pool team handles safety. Together we agree on:
- how many children will attend
- which parts of the pool are open
- how many lifeguards are needed
That way we keep it safe and festive!

3 tips for a successful swim disco
🎶 Choose the right music
The atmosphere stands or falls with the music. Think energetic hits children recognise and can dance to in the water. Think TikTok hits, classics like “De Vloer is Lava” or summery beats.
I always make sure there’s a build-up in the music: from warming up to full-on party. And of course song requests are welcome!
🌈 Make it visually spectacular
Provide:
- LED lighting around the pool
- Inflatable toys and floating party props
- Glowsticks or fluorescent bracelets
The combination of water and light makes it magical — especially when it’s dark outside!
🏆 Add interactive games
Keep it dynamic with mini-games:
- Limbo under an inflatable bar
- Dance contest on a mat
- Water conga through the pool
Interactive elements make sure kids don’t just swim in circles, but really join in.
Book a swim disco with entertainment?
A swim disco becomes extra special if you involve an entertainer — someone who leads the kids, presents games, plays request songs and keeps the vibe going.
🎉 That’s where I come in!
I turn your swim disco into a splashing party, complete with lights, sound, entertainment and 100% experience. Check out my kinderdisco-pagina for more info on how I make each party unique.
Need inspiration? Combine with a theme!
Themes make it even more fun. Think of:
- Tropical party (leis, coconut cups)
- Glow in the dark
- Pirates in the pool
- Jungle splash party
Kids love dressing up and a clear theme gives direction to decorations and games.
Practical matters
- Always consult the pool about safety and supervision.
- Give parents clear information about what to bring (swimwear, flip-flops, possibly extra clothes for themes).
- Consider photo or video corners (without faces in shot!) for memories.
