There is hardly a song that every child knows. Music at home, school and clubs varies from group to group. Start with recognition: which chorus do the children sing along to naturally?
Here are ideas to find out. For a complete birthday running order, use the party playlist for ages 8 to 12.
Singalongs to try together
These are examples, not a promise that every child knows them. Play a short section and see what the group recognises:
Dutch songs and simple movements
For a Dutch-speaking group, you could also try K3’s Waterval or Kinderen voor Kinderen’s Baila Bailala. Younger children can copy a movement even if they do not know the words. My Rocken op m’n luchtgitaar gives them something to act out straight away.
Does your group speak several languages? Pick an easy chorus and demonstrate a clap or movement. Knowing every word is not necessary.
Find out what your group knows
- Ask the birthday child or teacher for two songs the group enjoys.
- Play a little of the chorus. Do children join in or recognise a movement?
- Alternate a familiar song with something new.
- Let children choose not to sing. Clapping or watching is fine.
Familiar does not always mean suitable
A well-known song is not automatically suitable for every age. Listen to the lyrics and the exact version beforehand. Consider the youngest children in a mixed group.
Using the songs for a children’s disco? Mix singing with dancing and a short game. Find running order, breaks and age-specific choices in the separate party plan and playlist.
